At Natura, we spend a lot of time teaching the next generation of mushroom students! We work with and alongside universities to bring the inspiration of biomaterials into soon to be graduates' minds in order to expand the design industries access to environmentally friendly materials.
With the Royal College of Art, we ran a fungal foray to show how your next material making species of fungi is simply just a 'walk in the woods' away. We went out into London's little appreciated woodlands, collected samples and then took them back to OpenCell in order to create a tissue clone that could then be used for material production.
With Central Saint Martins, the challenge was to investigate students ideas into viable substrates and resources that could be used to grow materials - we saw tests of cigarettes, plastics and even fish guts to see if the mycelium could digest them!
